Synopsis:
Some boys break your heart. Others teach you how to heal it.

Chloe Stone’s life is a hot mess. Determined to stop being so freaking skittish, she packs up her quasi-famous best friend and heads to Florida. The goal? Complete the summer bucket list to end all bucket lists. The problem? Her hot soon-to-be stepbrother, Landon Jacobs.

Landon’s mom will throttle him if he even looks at his future stepsister the wrong way. Problem is, Chloe is everything he didn’t know he wanted, and that’s…inconvenient. Watching her tear it up on a karaoke stage, stand up to his asshole friend, and rock her first string bikini destroys his sanity.

But there’s more than their future family on the line. Landon is hiding something—something he knows will change how she feels about him—and she’s hiding something from him, too. And when the secrets come out, there’s a good chance neither will look at the other the same way again…

Chloe
It’s not like I didn’t know better. How many times has it been drilled into my brain—into the brain of every child over the age of three. Don’t get into a car with a stranger. But can the guy you’ve been melting for since the start of sophomore year really be considered a stranger…even if you never officially met him before?

I accidentally gun the gas as I squirm a little. Eight hours in a driver’s seat is hell on any behind.

It’s done. It’s over. In fact, I’m lucky. I got out of the nightmare with all my firsts still intact…well, most of them. Not quite the first kiss I have been waiting for these past sixteen years. But how juvenile is it anyway that a girl on the brink of seventeen would go un-kissed? Sweet sixteen and never been kissed—endearing. Seventeen and never been kissed—circus freak. At least that’s out of the way.

Jenna rouses in the passenger seat, yawning. “Oh my God. There’s the ocean.”

So it is, Captain Obvious. My Honda Civic starts its ascent up a fairly frightening looking bridge over an inlet.

“How long have I been asleep?”

“Couple of hours.”

She grabs her phone and squints at the screen. “Service. Thank God.”

I can’t help but smile. “What would Jenna Quigley do without social media for a day?”

“I have my fans to consider,” she says.

I give her a look.

“Kidding.”

Oh, but if only she was kidding. It’s amazing what placing eighth in a karaoke contest can do for one’s ego. Okay, so it was the most popular singing competition on any major network, but same difference.

She flips through her phone. “Oooh. I almost forgot. You’re going to love this one.”

Jenna and I are two of the most unlikely best friends in the history of friendships, but one thing that does bring us together is our shared love of music.

Unfortunately, our tastes couldn’t possibly be further apart on the spectrum.

“You’ve said that about the last five songs you played for me,” I say.

She holds up her free hand, the thumb on the other still scrolling. “I swear this is one of your people, not mine.”

She sets her phone down and stares at me with those huge green eyes as the synthpop sounds of St. Lucia fill my car.

I eye her. I wouldn’t call St. Lucia one of my people, but he definitely doesn’t suck. And as far as artists go that break the barrier between her pop roots and my alt rock ones, this is one I can live with. Besides, this song is highly danceable. My upper body moves to the beat without my permission.

She points at me. “See! I told you you’d love it.”

I let a smile through. “I don’t hate it. How did you get into him?”

“Mason,” she says.

And with that name, my shoulders still. Not that there’s anything wrong with Mason. He’s not the one who tried to force himself on me. No, that particular honor goes to his best friend, Trevor. I haven’t told Jenna yet. She’ll be crushed when she finds out—and then murderous. With the summer in front of us, I need to keep her living in blissful ignorance. If I don’t, she’ll blow up to Mason about it, and then it will become this huge deal around school.

As far as she’s concerned, Trevor and I kissed, and there was no spark.

“So this kid who’s going to be your stepbrother—what’s his name?” Jenna asks.

Here we go. I suppose I’ve put this off long enough. “I probably should mention… He’s not really a kid.”

“Great. Is he some pervy preteen who’s going to be peeping through the crack of my bedroom door?”

“Not exactly.” I don’t know if he’s pervy or not, but I do know he’s not a preteen. He’s only a year older than us. It’s stupid, but I’m not ready for Jenna to find out yet. If I’d told her when I found out, she’d have found him on social media and wrapped him around her pinky before we even arrived. I just want a chance to get to know him at the same time rather than the two of them being old buds and best friends before we even arrive…or worse, dating.

I stare past the road out into the sparkling ocean spread in front of us. Secretly, I’m hoping he’s more like me than he is like her. I’ve never had a brother. God, I need that right now. A guy I can trust, who’s got my back. I have these ridiculous fantasies of this guy who immediately takes me under his protective wing as he kickboxes Trevor in the balls for what he tried to make me do…for what he swears we will do someday.

“So? What’s his name?” Jenna repeats.

“I don’t remember,” I lie.

She glares at me. “Well, what has your dad told you about him?”

I hit the blinker, and we turn toward our home for the next two months. “You think my dad and I have actual conversations?”

Jenna sits up and gasps, staring out the window. “No. Freaking. Way.”

A massive stone archway with sleek, aqua letters reading Sea Glass Cove welcomes us into a resort covered in pastel beach bungalows, a crazy big golf course, and a pool that looks like it was hijacked from Atlantis.

“Why didn’t you tell me your dad was loaded?” Jenna asks.

“He’s not,” I say. “This is his fiancée’s house.”

She snickers. “Score, Mr. Stone. Your dad must be hotter than I remember.”

I make a face. “Gross, Jenna.”

“Does he have a huge penis?” She pokes me in the side.

I swerve. “You’re going to get us killed, nasty.”

Jenna stabs a finger across my face. “265, there it is.”

I turn into the driveway of a two-story baby blue house. A black Jeep sits next to a shiny red Porsche SUV in front of my Honda. All this belongs to my future stepmother. Geez. Does my dad have a huge penis?

I open the door, and the salty sea air hits my face like the smell of chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven. Florida, even the humidity that’s so thick I think I might need an asthma inhaler, is my temporary escape for the summer.

I know I have to go back home to Cliff Ridge eventually, but when I do, the evil Trevor will be gone for college. As much as the next two months are going to win the award for most awkward daughter/dad summer ever, it’s better than the alternative of spending it back home looking over my shoulder.

I open the trunk and start gathering our bags.

“Cute,” Jenna says.

I glance at the house next door. “Yeah, you won’t find lavender houses in Cliff Ridge.”

“Not the house,” Jenna says out of the corner of her mouth.

“Let me get that.”

I look up to put a face with the unfamiliar male voice. Holy Zac Efron. Who in the… Oh no. I bet this is—

“Hey.” He grins at Jenna. “Which one of you is my new little sister?”

Jenna’s eyes go wide and she elbows me in the side. “Thank God not me.”

Great. Just…great.

He gives her a mischievous lift of an eyebrow, and then shifts his gaze to me. “Chloe?”

This guy has got the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen and short, shaggy, dark hair that falls all around his face in that totally messy and totally doesn’t care kind of way. Standing at least six feet tall, he towers over me, but I’m used to that. A light sprinkling of freckles decorates his tanned face, whereas I look like I’ve been hiding under a UV protected rock my whole life.

I scratch my eyebrow. “Yeah. Landon, right?”

“I thought you couldn’t remember his name,” Jenna mutters.

I cut my eyes at her in warning. He offers me his hand, and I take it.

“So you’re the new sister. You’re my first.” He gives the slightest hint of a smile and lets go of my hand. We watch as he wrangles our big roller bags out of the trunk and carries them both by the handles into the house.

Jenna rests an elbow on my shoulder. “Who needs to use the rollers when you’ve got muscles like that?”

She looks at me for a reaction, but I turn to the trunk to avoid her.

“So, some kid brother you got there,” she says. “What the hell, Chlo?”

I tug the rest of the bags out of the trunk and load us both down with them. “I said he wasn’t a kid…exactly.”

Jenna points to his backside as he climbs the front porch steps. “Not a kid, exactly? That is a full-fledged man. His boy parts grew up years ago.”

I anchor a canvas bag to her right shoulder. “Don’t be gross.”

I shut the trunk, and we make our way toward the house.

Landon holds the door open for us, and we scoot past him into the foyer. It’s weird stepping into this house that I guess will be my home in a way. My dad lives here after all, but it’s not really his…at least not yet. I glance around at all the white and aqua stuff, including a pristine white couch. God, I hope I don’t spill anything on that.

“This is a beautiful house,” I say.

“My mom’s a real estate agent. She’s into decorating houses and stuff.”

I glance around. “Is my dad here?”

“They just texted. They’ll be here in just a little while. They’re getting dinner stuff.” He smiles. “I think they’re going all out for your first night.”

I suppose that warms my heart a tad. Doesn’t really make up for my dad’s virtual complete absence from my life for the past five months, but who’s keeping score.

“Where will we be sleeping?” Jenna asks with innuendo.

“Upstairs. Follow me.”

As he leads us up the stairs Jenna points at his behind again and gives a thumb’s up. I give my throat a slice in warning, and it just eggs her on.

He hauls our suitcases into a pale yellow room. Jenna tosses her bags on one of the twin beds, and I sit down on the other.

“I’ll let you settle in. Nice to meet you, Jenna…Chloe.”

“Likewise,” Jenna says as he shuts the door to our room behind him.

I glare at her.

She flops onto the bed she claimed. “What’d I do?”

“We’re going to be here two months,” I say pointedly.

“So?”

“So if you hook up with him now and things go sour next week, it’s going to be a long two months.”

She sighs and sits up. “Point taken. Besides that, he’s just the first one we’ve seen. I bet there are a whole slew of them down at the beach. Let’s go.” She rips into her suitcase and comes up with a hot pink bikini.

“I want to wait for my dad to get home. You go.”

“That’s cool. I’ll wait with you.” She pulls her phone out of her pocket and flips through one of her seven or eight social media apps, I assume.

“Ah, look at my sweetie.”

“Who?” I ask. It could be anyone.

She glowers at me. “Mason.”

I nod. Of course. They hooked up the same night I had my fiasco with Trevor. Jenna never clarifies what she means by hooked up. I’m guessing it’s somewhere between a peck on the cheek and full-on sex. I hang clothes in one of the two closets, and then pull out the bag with my shower stuff. As I go to set my shampoo down on the corner of the tub, I notice a bottle of men’s body wash. I realize that the door I assumed was to a linen closet is actually too big to be a closet door. I creep toward it and give it a little shove. It leads to another bedroom. A guy’s bedroom.

Gray, t-shirt material sheets pool on the unmade bed. A football poster decorates one wall, while another poster of Kate Upton in a bikini hangs on another. At least sixty or seventy hardbacks line the shelves of a bookcase. I check the door, and then take a few steps closer to read the titles—biographies, many of world leaders or prominent figures in history. I spot one sitting on his desk with a bookmark peeping out of it. Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy.

He’s redeemed for the Kate Upton poster.

A classic tennis racket in a wooden case sits on a shelf above his bed. A toddler-sized jersey hangs in a frame on one wall next to a shelf housing a single trophy. I come closer and read the plaque. The Mean Green Gorillas, Team Participant. I can’t help but giggle.

“I don’t come in your room and laugh at your stuff.”

I jump a mile and spin around.

Landon lounges against the doorframe.

Justin Carter has a secret. He's not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy...and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she'd ever forgive him.

Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. With graduation one short month away, she'll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.

For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate's given him a shot at redemption, he's determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton...well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.

Review

“It’s not hate or anger pooling in my gut – God, I wish it were. More like humiliation, hurt, and intense regret. Also a dash of loneliness and stupid longing.”

Oh, this book. I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t hooked by the first chapter! I tend to avoid second-chance romances because I can’t bear to see the characters relive the past that hurt them. I sympathize too much, not to mention my heart is seriously weak against fictional heartaches. I mean, no matter how light the book is supposed to be, there’s still always that tinge of heartache that gets to me. But Rachel Harris is one of those authors whose books have yet to fail me. As well, I liked Justin from The Fine Art of Pretending a lot so reading The Natural History of Us is just simply inevitable.

But as expected, The Natural History of Us was a little difficult to read for me. Not because it’s a horrible book but because of the emotions! It’s told from dual POV’s of Justin and Peyton in two alternating timelines: (1) freshman year before the “disaster” and; (2) senior year before graduation. That said, I got to really relive the time when Peyton got her heart broken by Justin. I was so nervous while reading the past because their freshman year romance was so cute, so sweet, and so natural—it was the kind that gave even me, as a reader, butterflies in the stomach—and I kept dreading the moment where everything would turn upside down. And lo, because when it did, it almost gave me a heart attack. I didn’t expect *that* to be in this book. Really, why did you do that, Rachel Harris?? These poor kids! And my poor heart!

If you’ve read The Fine Art of Pretending, chances are you already love Justin Carter. He is the catcher of the school’s baseball team and also the resident player, but we’ve all guessed from the first book that there’s more to him than just a guy who hooked up with random women. Justin grew up with his father, stepmother, and a younger half-brother. Not really feeling what it means to be part of a family nor how to be loved by a parent. They even leave him in their huge house when the three of them go on vacations. His brother is the only person in the family who seemed to actually love him, but he’s too young to catch on with the family’s issues. This truly broke my heart and I felt so much for Justin. Even when Peyton’s parents treated Justin as their son it wasn’t the same because they weren’t real family.

Peyton Williams, however, is the quiet girl who lives on a ranch and loves baseball and rodeo. She has Guillian Barre Syndrome but this never stopped her from chasing her dreams. Even if Peyton was only mentioned a couple of times in the first book, it was enough to make me curious about her and my curiosity has been well paid because I love her as a character. Her family is struggling to make the ends meet because of her illness that forced her to stay in a hospital for a long time. Peyton may be quiet but she’s bold, headstrong, and doesn’t back down from any challenge.

Harris’ The Natural History of Us perfectly captured the sweetness and the troubles of a teenage romance. It’s honest and it doesn’t hold back from telling events that are usually taboo in the usual light YA because such things do happen in real life even at a young age. Justin and Peyton are genuine characters. They aren’t flawless. At 15, they were reckless and confused but it doesn’t mean they will stay like that forever. The experience they gained helped in order to fix their mistakes from the past. I know I said that I tend to avoid second-chance romance books but after reading this book, I’m really craving for more of its kind!

Further, the format of the storytelling also brought out the best of the plot. It’s like reading two different stories at once because both have the kind of beginning that will set off your curiosity, a middle whose secrets will keep you second guessing, and an end which ultimately connect the two stories together. I don’t consider this book a light read–semi-light, maybe, but it doesn’t change the fact that The Natural History of Us is one enthralling read that demands to be finished in one sit.

The Natural History of Us maybe a sequel to The Fine Art of Pretending but it can also be read as a standalone.

A review copy was received for a blog tour in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt

Planting my feet on the floor, I grab the assignment packet. I thumb through the long list of group dates, taking note of all the partner-time required (a lot), and a rush of endorphins floods my bloodstream. My heart pounds just like it did when I tagged out Jefferson to win last night’s game, and when a relieved exhale parts my lips, I hear Carlos say, “Uh oh.”

“What?” I ask distractedly.

“You’ve got that psycho look in your eyes.” I raise my eyes and he waves a finger back and forth in front of my face. “The same one you had before we egged Crestmont High last week. You’re planning something.”

Adrenaline bounces my knee. “Maybe I am.”

My hand beats out a rhythm on my thigh as I realize that this is exactly what I’d been waiting for. The answer to the itch under my skin. My extreme restlessness. It’s not a new feeling—if I were honest, it’s been on a low simmer for years. Being with Aly just brought it to a boil. I’ve been numb ever since I lost Peyton, and this… this insane marriage project is my chance to finally make things right.

“Tell Abuelita I’ll be there,” I say, returning my gaze to the back of Peyton’s head. “And that I’ll be bringing a girl even she can’t complain about.” From the corner of my eye, I see him stare at me in confusion. “I’m bringing my wife.”

Carlos’s mouth opens in a mix of shock and doubt and I don’t blame him. I saw Peyton’s reaction, too. But I have three whole weeks between now and then, and a plan taking shape in my mind.
Peyton may think she hates me, but that’s only because she doesn’t know the total truth. Soon, that’ll change—but I can’t rush it. I have to start small. Ease into it. Use these dates and outings to show her how much I’ve changed since I was fifteen and screwed everything up.

But I will do it.

“Mark my words, Carlos,” I say, feeling excited about a girl for the first time in a very long time. But then, that’s because it’s not just any girl; it’s my girl. She just doesn’t know it yet. “I’m gonna be the best damn husband in this entire class.”

He looks at me uncertainly, but that doesn’t faze me. I won’t let it. I know I don’t deserve it. Hell, I never deserved her. But I’m not letting anything stop me. Not this time. Thanks to Coach Stasi, I’m going to remind Peyton of all the reasons she fell for me in the first place.

And then I’m going to make her do it again.

[Blog Tour] Review: Between Shadows by Chanel Cleeton

Between Shadows (An Assassins Novel)
by Chanel Cleeton
Release date: January 19, 2016
Genre: Thriller

Synopsis:
A sexy new thriller about love and revenge from the author of the Capital Confessions and International School series…

X lives by three rules: Show no weakness. Trust no one. Don’t get caught. She lives by the rules they gave her.

The Academy—set in London, shrouded in secrecy—it trains spies, computer experts, and assassins. Their mission? Dispensing justice and altering the course of world politics. Or so they think. In a world where secrets are weapons and some kills are impossible to forget, everything X thought she knew about her life is about to change.

They taught her to fight. To blend into the shadows like a ghost, to operate on the fringes of society, to change her identity with ease. They taught her to kill.

She’ll need every skill they taught her, to stay alive.

Review:
"It’s the banner I’ll carry when I annihilate them."
“Maybe I’ll see if I can play with you later.” I laugh, the sound harsh in the cold London night. You don’t play with a vial of smallpox.

Can we talk about how badass our protagonist, X, is? Because damn, that girl says the most kickass lines ever and she's not just all talk! There's tons of action here too. In fact, we get to see X's fierceness at the start of the book right off the bat.

X is a trained assassin who works for the Academy and is regarded as the best student in class. She has a younger sister, Grace, who specializes in computers. Both of them are orphans whose childhood lives are shrouded by tragedy and secrets that even to them are unknown. This backstory plays a major role in the story and although it comes up from time to time through X’s dreams, it doesn’t fully show up until the latter part of the book because first, X had to deal with her history with Luke. *cue fangirl shrill*

Luke is also an assassin in the Academy, the best one before X took the top spot. It was clear in the beginning that he and X has a history together but it was only revealed little by little as the story progressed. However, the fact that they were romantically involved was pretty much obvious from the start. And if you put that and the fact that they are both assassins working under an organization that technically has its hands wrapped around their necks, you can pretty much get the gist of what happened between the two or why X chose to betray Luke.

Other than Luke is incredibly hot though, he is also really badass. Think of Rose and Dimitri from Vampire Academy. X and Luke are similar in terms of their badassness, but the similarities stop there. I love that X and Luke treat each other equally. Honestly, I think there’s nothing hotter than a kickass couple who regard each other as equals. There are times when Luke becomes protective of X but it always ends up to him supporting her.

As well, I love the relationship between Luke and X. Although they have a past and their attraction to each other was practically visible even at the beginning, their romance is still the slow burn type aka my type of romance. X did something to Luke that made him disappear for two years and when he came back, they were both different persons.

Their past made a huge dent if not destroyed their mutual trust, but apparently not the feelings, that when they met again, the two were constantly battling their minds and emotions as to whether to trust the other or not. It was evident when Luke thought that something came up within the Academy that could potentially endanger their lives and redefine X and Grace’s past. This was made even worse (for them but exciting for me) because they still have feelings for each other.

Overall, Between the Shadows by Chanel Cleeton is one exciting thriller with a well-paced plot, fierce characters, and enthralling storyline that will keep your eyes glued to the pages from the beginning till end.

But with each piece of payback, she feels a stronger attraction to Felix, even though revenge will turn her into a girl Felix could never be with. And soon Hazel has to make an impossible choice: revenge...or Felix, the boy who’s stolen her heart.

WARNING! This book contains betrayal, revenge, and that most tempting vice of all, the bad boy you know you can't have.

I can’t stress enough just how cute Not Okay Cupid is. The book is short and the plot is very light. It delves into the topics of friendship, familial relationships, and romance which is what main focus of the book is. This isn’t the first time that I’ve read a book of its kind. With its summary, I think we already know where the story is headed to, but Not Okay Cupid has its own brand of uniqueness that makes it a compelling read.

Not Okay Cupid has a pair of main characters that add complex to the plot which, admittedly, is what the plot department lacks. I wouldn’t say that Hazel is an easy character to like though. She’s prejudiced and she’s the kind of girl that plans everything out including her future with her then boyfriend, Jay, who she found out was cheating on her with her bestfriend, Kimmy, who happened to be Felix’ sister.

Felix, unlike Hazel, is a very likeable character. I wasn’t that into him initially because of the way Hazel described him as like the typical high school pretty boy who gets a lot of girls but never taking any of them seriously. While it has some truth, there is more to Felix than just that. Felix is a very caring son and brother. He is selfless – always putting his family first before him unlike his sister, Kimmy, who cares more about shopping than helping the family meet the ends.

Felix is also pretty mischievous. In fact, he was the one who came up with the idea of fake dating to get revenge on Kimmy and Jay. I know it doesn’t sound like a smart idea what with all the books we’ve all read with the same theme, but still, I like that no matter how much Felix loved his bitch of a sister, he didn’t just stand there and watch the drama unfold instead he acknowledged that what his sister did was wrong most especially since it was her bestfriend whose boyfriend she stole. He set up a plan to punish both Kimmy and Jay by pretending to be dating Hazel just to throw them off and to get Jay jealous as well. Felix is definitely not a rocket scientist but he is compassionate and sympathetic. I also thought it was pretty cute that he was a needy fake boyfriend. He was aware of it and he tries not to be like it because he knew it was wrong to act like it so he wants to give her space. He’s also plenty excited about practically everything and I found that to be extremely cute!

Also, I love the mothers in this book! Hazel’s and Felix’s mothers are a sarcastic bunch and I love the dynamics they have with their children. As well, I like that these characters are three-dimensional. Hazel started out as a judgmental girl who only cared about the things that she has planned out, but as the story progressed and she got to spend more time with Felix, she slowly opened up to him, and to the things he did and to the people he was acquainted with that ultimately led to her growth as a character.

Not Okay Cupid is the perfect book for those looking for a fast and easy read that’s light, romantic and compelling.

Release date: September 1st 2015
Published by: Katherine Tegen Books
Genre: Young adult, realistic, contemporary

Synopsis:
Silas Hart has seriously shaken up Westlin Beck's small-town life. Brand new to town, Silas is different than the guys in Green Lake. He's curious, poetic, philosophical, maddening-- and really, really cute. But Silas has a sister-- and she has a secret. And West has a boyfriend. And life in Green Lake is about to change forever.

Truest is a stunning, addictive debut. Romantic, fun, tender, and satisfying, it asks as many questions as it answers.

Excerpt

It didn’t take long to confirm that Silas was absolutely crazy.

One morning he showed up at my house wearing an honest-to-goodness windbreaker suit straight out of the nineties: purple, mint green, and what is best described as neon salmon. I curbed a grin while Silas gathered our detailing supplies from my garage. “What?” he deadpanned. “What are you staring at?”

“Your windbreaker is just so …”

“Fetching?” he interjected. “Voguish? Swanky?”

“Hot,” I said, playing along. “The nineties neon just exudes sex appeal.”

“Well, I thought so myself.”

And after the sun was high in the sky and the pavement was heating up, he took off the windsuit, revealing shorts and a New Moon T-shirt beneath, Edward Cullen’s pale face dramatically printed across the front. “Vader’s competition,” he said, shrugged, and started vacuuming the floors of the Corolla left in our care.

He also talked about the strangest things: “Can you ever really prove anything? How?” or “I read about this composer who said his abstract music went ‘to the brink’—that beyond it lay complete chaos. What would that look like? Complete chaos?” or “You know how in Shakespeare Romeo says, ‘Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized’? He’s talking about his name, but baptism’s bigger than that; it has to be. It’s about identity, and wonder, and favor, you know?” or “A group of moles is called a labor; a group of toads is called a knot. Who comes up with this stuff? It’s a bouquet of pheasants, a murder of crows, a storytelling of ravens, a lamentation of swans. A lamentation of swans, West!”

One morning I was late coming downstairs, and Shea got to Silas first. The two of them sat drinking orange juice on the front steps and discussing Shea’s question of whether fish have boobs. “I think,” Silas said, sounding like a scholar, “they do not, since they’re not mammals. But mermaids do, since they’re half-fish, half-mammal.”

Mermaids aren’t real though,” Shea said, the tiniest bit of hope in his voice that Silas would prove him wrong.

Who told you that?” said Silas sternly.

You think they’re real?” Shea asked.

I can’t be sure,” Silas said, “but I might have seen one when I used to live in Florida. Probably best not to jump to any conclusions either way.”

Behind me, Libby giggled. Silas glanced at us over his shoulder through the screen door and grinned. “Libby,” he said, “what do you say? Mermaids, real or not?”

I don’t want to jump to conclusions either way,” my shy sister said, then turned bright red.

Smart girl,” said Silas.

That afternoon, Silas and I sat in the backseat of a dusty Saturn, trading off the handheld vacuum as we talked—or rather, shouted—over its noise. I ran the hand-vac over the back of the driver’s seat, while Silas said, “I used to think I was the only one with a crush on Emily Dickinson until a couple years ago.”

“You have a crush on Emily Dickinson?”

Durr. “Did you just ‘durr’ me? Is that like a ‘duh’?”

He nodded as I handed him the Dirt Devil. “But then I read this book that says it’s a rite of passage for any thinking American man. And then I read a poem called ‘Taking Off Emily Dickinson’s Clothes.’”

Just the title made me blush; I averted my eyes to focus on the vacuum’s trajectory.

Silas, unruffled, sighed unhappily.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, frowning, chancing a glance at him.

“I finally made it into the backseat with a girl,” Silas cracked, looking hard at the Dirt Devil. “This is not all I was hoping it would be.”

I slugged him in the arm, and his wry smile gave way to laughter.

I wake too early, before night has really ended. I’m restless. I stand before the mirror, fingers touching my temple, imagining the strange electric feeling of Stian’s fingers resting there. I know there are some things I can’t change about my life, like Keirna and Lexan, but as I study my reflection, I imagine that I can see a new strength emerging. I no longer seem like a naïve young girl, sulking through the inevitable constraints of life.

I quickly get ready for school, leaving Mother a note that I left early to meditate. She knows what I do, but not where. Again I leave my hair to curl and flow around my shoulders instead of restraining it in a braid, its color a constant peripheral reminder that I have the spirit of fire living in me – and I can start a revolution.

When I step into the secret room, Stian has just woken. He smiles at me, rubbing sleep from his eyes. I’m struck again by how natural he seems to feel around me.

“I brought you breakfast, but I can’t stay.”

“Good news and bad news,” he smiles. He stands and stretches, his shirt pulling up to expose a bit of taut stomach. I blink my eyes away.

“I have a proposition for you.”

“Will I like it?” he says, his fingers brushing mine a little too closely as they take the offered food.

“Teach me about the outside world,” I continue, trying to ignore how close he stands. He carries such a wild smell, like fresh air and growing things.

“How about I just show it to you?” He rumples his hair.

I shake my head. “Maybe one day. For now, I just need to know what I can expect if I ever go outside.”

He chews thoughtfully, his eyes sliding down my arm, following the curl of my hair. “Okay.” He holds out a hand, like we’re really making a deal. I smile, placing mine in his. He grasps it, covering it with his other hand, his eyes laughing at me. “I have to go to school now.

”I tug my hand free and back away. He watches me go, an indecipherable look on his face. How I act and react are my choice alone, nothing to do with the day I was born. This strategy is mine to devise, and I’m making my own plans for battle.

This is a New Adult romance recommended for readers 17 and up.
Review:

Aaaand another book gets added to my list of sexy books! Did you know that before 2014, I only read young adult books and two or three new adult books that are not really NA but are more like YA? I wanted to expand my reading genre this year and though NA has let me down a couple of times before, I still thrived. That said, I’m glad to report that I See London is my fifth NA this year AND this is also the fifth NA that I came to love this year!

I initially thought that I See London was a standalone so I was surprised that it has a sequel, London Falling, which by the way I’m really excited about because one of the five NA’s I’ve read this year has the same title and I loved it as well. Though with the way the book left off, I am actually really glad that we’re going to get more from the characters, but with that, you can also deduce that this has a cliffhanger, but not the heart-attack inducing type.

Maggie is a fun character whom I can relate to at first. She’s easy-going, innocent and a very hard-working student. She even got accepted to the International School in London. She was, overall, a good girl but when she started attending the International School and met different people, she started to become a different person too; favoring parties and boys over her studies. Though this is obviously the wrong way to a good character growth, I actually liked watching her transition from a good girl to an irresponsible girl. We have two hotties vying for Maggie’s affection here. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you’ll know that I don’t like love triangles at all. However, I have faith in my OTP and I know that whatever happens, I’ll get what I want in the end. *rubs hands and chuckles maniacally* it’s true tho.

Another thing I really liked about I See London is the side characters. Fleur. My word, that girl is a bitch, but somehow I love her. If you told me before that this book is part of a series, I’d assume that it’s a series of companion novels and that Fleur’s story is next. Either way, I’d read the sequel whether it’s Fleur’s story or not, because it’s just good. I See London has its own brand of flaws but despite that, it’s an enjoyable read with well-paced plot and an easy air to it.

Excerpt

There’s a long silence, and I lift my head, but I can’t bring myself to look at him as I tell him things I’ve never said out loud before. “Trent was practicing with his band in Lexie’s garage, and we were in the driveway flying her kite, but the wind gusted and it did this loop, and the string got caught in my braces. Lexie yanked, I screamed, and when the guys came out of the garage to see what was up, they all started laughing. But not Trent. He came over and got me untangled. And he told the guys to cut the shit when they started calling me Jaws and asking if I got good reception.”

I remember it so clearly.

Hold still, he’d said. He grasped my chin gently and leaned in to examine my mouth. He was a little sweaty from jamming with the guys, and I remember thinking I should think that was gross. But I didn’t. It was the opposite of gross. I’d crushed on a few guys in junior high, but I never remember my heart racing the way it did with Trent so close. He’d unhooked me from the kite, and when he let me go, he smiled this incredible sideways smile and said, Good to go, and that was it.

I sigh and sink deeper onto the cushions. “I fell in love with him right that second. But even though I was under his nose all the time, he never thought of me as anything but his stepsister’s best friend, so, for five years, I pined.”

[Blog Tour] Review: Deeper by Robin York + Giveaway

Deeper (Caroline & West #1)
by Robin York
Paperback, 400 pages
Expected publication: January 28th 2014 by Bantam
Source: ARC from InkSlinger PR
Purchase here: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis:
In this New Adult debut by Robin York, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right.

When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground.

West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works.

They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her.

When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.
Review:

I was immediately intrigued by this book the instant I read its synopsis. I might have judged Caroline a bit instantly also after reading it though (shame on me!). With the recent influx of the same case here in my country, I can’t help but think: why would girls let guys, even if he’s a significant other, to take private pictures/videos of them together? If you don’t want others to see it, then why do it all? It was a simple but effective prevention to that. With that, I guess you can already assume my non-existent experience when it comes to this kind of relationship. That said, after reading Robin’s Deeper, I can proudly say that I have learned something and I am very thankful for Robin for making me realize what I didn’t understand by reading this book.

Caroline is a character that’s very easy to sympathize with. What happened to her is an unimaginably terrible thing to happen to anyone. She has an ambition in life. She wants to go to law school and be a judge, but after what happened, how can people possibly respect her anymore? One mistake and her dreams all came tumbling down. Her actions afterwards were all understandable and I can’t blame her for them but I couldn’t help but feel sad for her. I kept cheering her on. Nevermind that she couldn’t hear me. The girl needed all the support she could get! And this is where West enters the picture. West is not the most sanctimonious guy out there and if I were Caroline, I’d run the opposite way at the sight of him – or not. Actually, nevermind about his dirty record and drug pushing activities. The guy is extremely hot! And really, he’s not so bad. He is, in fact, a really good person. I love that there’s more to him than just a smexy guy. He has his own personal battles to fight and it’s really cute that he loves his sister so much.

Deeper is a thought-provoking novel that will take you in a roller coaster ride of emotions. Did I mention it’s hot? I am just so happy that Caroline finally opened up to West. West is such a wonderful guy and I know he’s going to take care of Caroline. I’m really rooting for these two. I love them so much! The intimate scenes between them are S-C-O-R-C-H-I-N-G! And the character development? Astounding. The romance is slow burn and it was a joy to watch them grow closer to each other. But really, what I love the most about their relationship is that they started off as friends. Heck, even their friendship started off on a rocky path. So you can really see the remarkable development in their characters and relationship alike. There is a slight cliffhanger but I have faith in these characters and I KNOW that everything is going to work out for them in the end.
