Waiting on Wednesday (8): The Pledge & Anna Dressed in Blood

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My WoW:
The Pledge
Kimberly Derting
Novemeber 15th 2011

Words are the most dangerous weapon of all.

In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she’s spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.

Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can’t be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country’s only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime.
Why am I Waiting for The Pledge? I am a big, big, big fan of Derting's Body Finder series. I just love her writing and the premise of this book looks just about epic and original.

Anna Dressed in Blood

August 30th 2011

Summary:

Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story…

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.
Why am I waiting for Anna Dressed in Blood? Another book with an intriguing premise and epic cover. I've never read a horror book before but I feel like I'm really going to love this one.

  13. The Pledge is on my TBR and I think it mainly has to do with the cover (shame on me) because the premise doesn't really interest me all that much and I have yet to read The Body Finder. But I've heard good things about that one so hopefully I'll like this one since I really like dystopians:)

Also thanks for commenting on my blog!

  14. Oooh, the Pledge is definitely on my wishlist, love that cover and the fact that the society is based on linguistic differences.

  15. I'm soooo waiting on both if these too!!! Awesome picks!

  16. The Pledge is also on my list :). I recently acquired The Body Finder--have yet to read it--but I've heard really great things about Kimberly Derting [including, now, from you!]. Plus, I agree with you about the premise being epic & original. Love the fact that it has those linguistic boundaries and takes place in another country--a dystopian society I could actually imagine having happened at some point [except for someone understanding every language].

AND I love your other choice too! I just saw Anna Dressed in Blood on another WoW and freaked out. So chilling but I also think that it'll be much more than just a horror book :) [cause I too haven't read very many of those].

    AWESOME choices :)!!

[Also, can I say how much I love the title of your blog? Procrastination is what I'm doing right now :D. But it's okay since it's for such awesome books :)!)
