Book Review: Through the Ever Night (Re-read)

Hardcover, 352 pages
Published January 8th 2013 by HarperCollins
Source: Bought

Book Description:

It's been months since Aria learned of her mother's death.

Months since Perry became Blood Lord of the Tides, and months since Aria last saw him.

Now Aria and Perry are about to be reunited. It's a moment they've been longing for with countless expectations. And it's a moment that lives up to all of them. At least, at first. Then it slips away. The Tides don't take kindly to former Dwellers like Aria. And the tribe is swirling out of Perry's control. With the Aether storms worsening every day, the only remaining hope for peace and safety is the Still Blue. But does this haven truly exist?

Threatened by false friends and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night? In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and sci-fi elements to create a captivating adventure-and a love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.

Review:

This series is one of the many reasons why I have a love-hate relationship with ARC's. I first read Under the Never Sky on November of 2011, two months before its official release. I fell in love with Aria and Perry so hard and it was on my top10 reads of 2011, so you can just imagine the agony of having to wait one year and two months just to read this book. I remember constantly refreshing its Amazon page on the day of its release so I could download it to my cloudreader immediately because I'm paranoid about pre-ordering things online. I loved Through the Ever Night on the first read, almost as much as I loved the first book. I didn't think I could've loved it even more and had I not reread this after all those months ago, I wouldn't have been able to prove myself wrong. This book, Through the Ever Night, is immaculate! The last middlebook I went ballistic over was Catching Fire so it really made me teary-eyed to find another book to add to that list.

Through the Ever Night actually started out slow for me but it was just as well because I wanted to savor every moment and every scene of the book. Picking up from where the first book left off, Aria and Perry are reunited together in book two. Really, this should be a dream come true for me but with Perry struggling as the new Blood Lord of the Tides and the Tides hating Aria for being a Dweller, their relationship wouldn't be taken kindly by his people so both kept their relationship hidden. These two are a favorite couple so it was really frustrating to see them not acknowledging their feelings for each other. However, the very few times they shared together made things even more extra special. But still, they might be together but they might as well be separated. And separated, they were. Aria and Roar set off to rescue Liv, leaving Perry (and the readers) miserable and brokenhearted.

Through the Ever Night is really about how Perry and Aria develop as individual characters. We saw them work together in book one so book two delves deeper into their own distinct characters. We see how Perry copes up with being a Blood Lord. His motives and decisions are constantly questioned by his people. He's trying his best not to be like his late brother who sacrifices his own people for the betterment of the majority however, the results are not always as good as the motives. The saddest thing about this is that he has no Aria or Roar to go to. The longing he felt for Aria was almost palpable. This is where his loyalty to Aria is tested too what with the new characters clouding over his judgment and one even trying to seduce him.

Aria, too, has grown so much. The time she spent with Roar made they their friendship so much stronger, rivaling that of Perry and Roar. But also, it made her character stronger and independent as well. She was Roar's rock through all the tragedy that happened to him. Plenty of times, my heart broke for the characters; for Aria, Perry and most especially Roar and Liv. Seriously, Roar and Liv. We all loved Roar's easy character in the first book but here, we see him at his very worst.

You better prepare your kleenex, hot choco with marshmallows on top and your most huggable stuffed toys because you'll need a lot of serious cuddling after reading this book. This is a very exhausting read but tb the end of this book,I was teary-eyed, both satisfied and disheartened by the events that transpired but also both dreading and anticipating the last book in the series.

Top Ten Books on My Fall 2013 TBR

Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's topic is Top Ten Books on My Fall 2013 TBR List all which I'm branding as mandatory reads.;)

1. The Fiery Heart (Bloodlines #4) by Richelle Mead – Huge fan of Bloodlines series here! Even though I didn’t love The Indigo Spell as much as the first two books, I’m still eagerly anticipating for this.

2. Steelheart (Reckoners #1) by Brandon Sanderson – I loved, loved, loved Brandon’s The Rithmatist and I’ve heard a lot of positive [early] reviews for Steelheart so naturally, I’m also eager to read this book.

3. The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle #2) by Maggie Stiefvater – Because Gansey x Blue. And I’d read anything by Maggie Stiefvater.

4. World After (Penryn & the End of Days #2) by Susan Ee – I recently featured this in my WoW. I read the first book 2 years ago and even after all this time, I still can’t get over the ending!

5. Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles #6) by Kevin Hearne – I’ve already started on this one months ago but had to set it aside because of school. I still haven’t gotten around to reading it again so I’m putting it on my [mandatory] fall tbr list.

6. The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner #2) by James Dashner – I bought a copy of this during the sale in one of the local bookstores. I also cannot wait to see the movie as I’m also a fan of the first book.

7. Tiger’s Curse (The Tiger Saga #1) by Colleen Houck – Been hearing so many good things about this series. Thanks to my local bookstore I got the impulse to buy this (for 70% less) so off to [mandatory] fall tbr you are!

8. The Hallowed Ones (The Hallowed Ones #1) by Laura Bickle – Because vampire apocalypse. Need I say more?

9. The Iron Traitor (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #2) by Julie Kagawa – Not a big fan of The Lost Prince but will be giving it a second chance because I heart Julie.

10. Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking #3) by Patrick Ness – I’ve put off reading this after I peeked at the ending, lol. I loved the first two books so much and the ending of this almost killed me. But still, I want to finish this series so I’m putting it on my [mandatory] fall tbr list.

Top Ten Books I Would Love To See As A Movie/TV Show

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This week's topic is Top Ten Books I Would Love to See As A Movie/TV Show (set in a perfect world...in which movies don't butcher the books we love.) Yeah because if movie adaptations do not murder every book adapted into film, that would be great.

1. The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson - I am in love with this book! You know that feeling the moment you start reading a book and you just start relaxing because you know it's going to be good? Yes, The Rithmatist is like that. I'm curious to see if the characters will be able to pull off the chalk drawings and the battles and of course, the CGI!

2. Unwind by Neal Shusterman - If I remember correctly, this has already been optioned for film years ago but I haven't heard of any updates since then. Unwind is one of the first dystopian books I've read and is also one of my favorites right up there with The Hunger Games so it will probably crush me if the movie murdered the book.

3. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson - Unlike the rest of the books in this list, I actually didn't like Mistborn. However, I loved the world Brandon created here - the magic, the fight scenes... I would love to see those in the big screen.

4. Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi - And the sequel, Through the Ever Night, too! And maybe once I read the last book in the trilogy, I'd want to see it as a TV show.

5. Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley - Is the only realistic fiction in this list and is also one of my favorite contemps. I want to see this as a movie because I want to see Shadow's paintings in real life. Would be much better if the actor can pull off his paintings hee~

6. Cinder by Marissa Meyer - Ever since I read this book, I haven't stopped praying to the gods and goddesses of the book to movie adaptations that this would be made into a film. I loooove the world of Cinder and I'm very interested to see how Cinder and Kai would look like in real life as well as the androids and Queen Levana. I'd like to see how their glamour looks like. Also, Captain Thorne.

7. The Queen of Attolia and 8. The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner - If you know me well enough, it's not a secret that The Queen's Thief series is my all time favorite series evaaar! Needless to say, I want to see these books as a TV show because 1.) Eugenides 2.) Irene 3.) Eugenides' wit 4.) Eugenides x Irene 5.) The storyline 6.) The setting 7.) Repeat 1-7.

9. Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta - One of the most intense high fantasy books I have ever read. It's depressing and kinda tragic. The characters are not my favorite but I loved the plot and the surprises that came along with it. If this were to be made into a film/TV show, I'm expecting a high-budget studio to adopt this.

10. Pivot Point by Kasie West - Yes, please! Pivot Point is one of the most surprising reads for me this year. I loved the storyline but I loved the characters even better! I would love to see how the actors would portray the characters.

The Titans appear to have only one purpose: to consume humanity.

For one hundred years, what's left of mankind has lived in the city on earth, protected by walls that tower over even the Titans. Untouched by the Titans for a century, humanity has become complacent. But Eren Jaeger has had enough. While his fellow citizens are content to hide, Jaeger has the passion to take action to not only protect the city, but to learn what the Titans actually are. But on his first mission he comes face to face with horrors beyond his imagination... and secrets from his own past that could shift the tides of war.

Jaeger and his friends are determined to survive. But everything about their situation is a mystery that only becomes more complicated the more they learn. Attack on Titan is a breathtaking debut from a young talent, and a phenomenon that is sweeping Japan! (Source: Midtown Comics).

Review:

The description doesn't lie, my dear reader-friends, Attack on Titan is indeed a breathtaking manga. You might not think that action-packed still images can render you speechless, unable to to work your jaw from too much awe much like an action-packed motion picture does, but do me a favor and try reading this manga because. It. Will. Blow. You. Hard. Period.

It's not specified whether Attack on Titan is set in past, future or present. The world during the story is devastated by Titans, gigantic human-like beings ranging from 5m to 15m tall. But though they look like humans, they are genderless and have no human intelligence. They are incredibly strong and they eat humans even though they have no digestive systems, as if the essence of their existence is to predate on human beings alone.

For a hundred years, humankind has been protected from the Titans by 50-meter high walls. In the first chapter, we see our male MC, Eren Jaeger, aspiring to become a member of the Scouting Legion, those who are actively fighting Titans outside the walls. Most people have given up the hopes that Titans will someday be eradicated, more so because the Scouting Legion, the only troop that they trust to save them from the Titans has never had a positive result moreover, their numbers continue to dwindle by more than half whenever they scout the outside. It was a lost cause, some would say. However, Eren is different. He is ambitious. Young and weak as he is, he is very courageous to the point of stupidity. Even though most people are contented with their life inside the walls, Eren wanted to brave the Titans outside and bring freedom to the human race.

It has been exactly 107 years since the walls were built. Since people started living peacefully again. But on that day, a Titan (Colossal type) that's taller than the walls broke through and disrupted the peace inside. This led to more Titans invading. Lots of people were devoured, including Eren's mother. The rest who survived were evacuated to Wall Rose, the second line of defense against the Titans.

I have never read a manga that's as action-packed as Attack on Titan. The first volume literally left me jaw-slacked and speechless. I couldn't get over the intensity of the scenes, most especially during the invasion! You can just feel the tragedy and drama AND Eren's angst coming off the pages. The author is ruthless. If you're looking for rainbows and butterflies, this is NOT the book for you. He doesn't care who dies and how they die. I was giddy from all that's transpiring but I couldn't help chanting "more!" in my mind. Fortunately, that's what exactly Hajime-san gave his readers. One after the other, he'd bomb you with push-me-on-the-edge scenes. Really, even writing this review makes me breathless.

For a first volume, Isayama Hajime really did a wonderful job with world building. He strategically left out some details on the world of the story for readers to wonder but in such a way where readers are also well-informed about the setting. The intensity in the first volume is very palpable. Truly, this is a terrifyingly beautiful story. I just hope this job well done would continue on with the rest of the volumes.

On Art: I love the artwork. None of the boys could be considered a bishie but regardless, I am in love with the detailed drawings!

On Cover: The first time I saw this cover,I was immediately turned off. That Colossal Titan didn't look very pretty to me, lol. Anyway, the guy mid-air is Eren sporting the 3D maneuver gear exclusive to the military which they use to jump from wall to wall which also doubles as scabbard for swords.

Stacking the Shelves (8) + MIBF IS COMINGGG!!!

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Tynga @ Tynga's Reviews

I haven't gone back to any of the National Bookstore branches to haul more books, but I'm deadset on going back next week since the cut price sale ends on September 10th. That said, I didn't get any physical books this week but I still got a rather awesome ebook haul!

From Edelweiss:

[ARC] The Shadow Prince (Into the Dark #1) by Bree Despain
[ARC]  White Space (Dark Passages #1) by Ilsa J. Bick

Free from Walker Books:

Chaos Walking trilogy short stories by Patrick Ness
Snowscape (#3.5)

After spoiling myself for jumping to the last few pages of Monsters of Men, I've put off from reading it because that ending is too emotional. I just didn't want that to be the end of the series so I decided to pretend that the third book didn't exist. It's only this week that I found out that there's a novella that's set after MoM and I read some spoilers that *bleep* is *bleep* and ohmy ok I shall read Monsters of Men from the beginning till end.

If you want to receive the Chaos Walking short stories for free, just fill up this FORM and you'll receive an email containing the three short stories!

[CHAPTER SAMPLER] Steelheart (The Reckoners #1) by Brandon Sanderson - *Cue fangirl screams* OHHMYGAWD! I admit, among all the September releases, this is the one I am anticipating the most. I read this chapter sampler and ohmy! *faints* it IS ah-mazing! I just want to devour the rest of the chapters but September 24th. :(

If you want to read the prologue + first five chapters of Steelheart for free, just click the image to download from its Amazon page. You will not be disappointed!

Thanks to Edelweiss and Egmont, Walker Books, and Delacorte and Amazon!

On a different (but still bookish) note, Filipino dudes and dudettes, the MIBF is coming!!! *dances around*

I know! September is officially my most favorite month. National Bookstore has an annual sale during September and then after there's MIBF. No wonder September is considered the start of the Christmas month here in the Philippines, lol.

If you're wondering about how to get the tickets, you can go to any Fullybooked branches and ask the customer service for one or you can just download and print this image to serve as your free entrance ticket. This is going to be my first time to go to MIBF so if you know other ways to get free tix, please let me know! (although from what I've heard the tix range from 15php-20php only?)

Another thing to be excited about in this year's MIBF besides the discounted books are the guest authors - local and international alike. I don't have the full list but I heard Ramon Bautista will be there too. Also,

Those three. NBS is an angel. I really hope I get to go on September 15th for this book signing event. There have been several international authors visiting the Philippines like Lauren Kate, Lauren Oliver, Kiera Cass, Tahereh Mafi (w/ Ranson Riggs) this past few months but I've never attended any of them so, fingers crossed!

World After (Penryn & the End of Days #2)
by Susan Ee
Paperback, 384 pages
Expected publication: November 19th 2013 by Skyscape
Book Description:
In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world. Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels' secret plans, where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.
Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

I am sooo glad that this finally has a cover! I'm one of those peeps who read and loved Angelfall before it was cool so I feel so proud of it that it's finally getting the attention it deserves. Anyway, I originally thought that this will be released this September so just imagine my dismay when I found out that it's on November. But on the bright side, I have a lot of time to reread Angelfall again and again since it has been almost 2 years since I read the first book. ;)

Manga Mondays (1): Blue Exorcist, Vol. 1

Blue Exorcist (Blue Exorcist, Vol. 1)
by Kazue Kato
Genre: Shōnen, Action, Supernatural
English, Paperback, 200 pages
Published April 5th 2011 by VIZ Media LLC
Buy the book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Synopsis:

This world consists of two dimensions joined as one, like a mirror. The first is the world in which the humans live, Assiah. The other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Ordinarily, travel between the two, and indeed any kind of contact between the two, is impossible.

However the demons can pass over into this world by possessing anything that exist within it.

Satan is the god of demons, but there's one thing that he doesn't have, and that's a substance in the human world that is powerful enough to contain him!

For that purpose he created Rin, his son from a human woman, but will his son agree to his plans? or will he become something else...? An exorcist?

Originally published in Japanese as 青の祓魔師 (Ao no Exorcist); translated in French and English as Blue Exorcist

Review: (Might contain minor spoilers)

When it comes to books, I'm more of the romance type but when it comes to manga, I'm all for the shōnen, action and adventure.

Okumura Rin, our hero, is like your typical shōnen protagonist who is short-tempered, strong-willed, boisterous and war freak. He is the son of a priest/exorcist and is the older twin brother of Yukio who is everything that Rin is not. Yukio is intelligent, patient, polite, responsible and has ambition in life. He is also the more weak-willed one who used to get bullied a lot. I'm a sucker for siblings with unconditional love for each other, so the flashbacks for when Rin used to save and protect Yukio from the bullies moved me.

Rin and Yukio have just finished middle school and while Yukio is to go to True Cross Academy as a scholar, Rin is left to go job hunting. Now, this is where the plot escalates rather quickly. When Rin left for a job interview, he began seeing weird little dark things floating around that no one else seems to be able to see. After, he is confronted by one of his gangster enemies, who later turned out to be a demon. It was also here that Rin discovered that he, too, was demon and the son of Satan, no less. But though he and Yukio are twins, only Rin inherited Satan's demon-blood. This secret was guarded by their adoptive father in order to hide Rin from Satan. These revelations happened in one chapter only and though shōnen manga generally tend to have eventful pilot chapters, I found it slightly discomforting since I've grown more accustomed to the slower pacing in YA novels and other shonen manga.

The second chapter focuses more on Rin and Yukio's relationship as siblings especially after what happened to their adoptive father. Here, we realize that Yukio is not as weak-willed as readers think he is. He continues to be the responsible one to his immature older twin brother which is just amusing to no end. In the third chapter, we meet a new character, Shiemi, an overly shy girl whose grandmother had just died and who also had an instance with a demon which Rin and Yukio helped to exorcise.

Overall, Blue Exorcist is a good addition to the list of shōnen manga with great promise, awesome drawing style and a humor to contend with the rest of them. Rin is definitely a crush-worthy bishie and I can't wait to read more of his adventures!

Cover: That's Rin looking cool and badass. Blue flame is the symbol of Satan and it only appears when he removes the sword from its scabbard. He also grows a tail and his ears become elongated like that of an elf's.
