A Part to Play

When fifteen-year-old actress Lucy Carter loses her older sister in a car accident, her mother shuts down and her father can’t hold the family together. Their only choice is to ship Lucy off to the Edmond School for Performing Arts. But boarding school is no cure for Lucy’s grief. With failing grades, wooden stage performances, and curfew violations, Lucy is threatened with expulsion. For the once talented Lucy, it feels as though she has nowhere to turn.

One night, Lucy hears mysterious music drifting through the school’s old heating system. The music leads her to a troubled but passionate songwriter whose brilliance gives her the strength to perform like never before. Yet their intense relationship puts Lucy in a precarious position: if she follows her muse, will she lose herself? And if she breaks it off, can she stand on her own again?

Teaser

Curious, Lucy stood there, still lost in the character. Suddenly, a bright light blinded her. Chris had turned on the spotlight, which, in the dark auditorium, had quite an impact. "Action!" she heard him call as he walked down the aisle toward her, script in hand.

It was scary, but also inspiring. He read the first line and Lucy responded, finding a new edge to the character of Eva. Everything clicked; Eva's motivation, her pain, her humor. When Lucy finished the scene, still standing in the intense light, Chris clapped. Then he jumped up on the stage and swung her around in a big circle.

"You were the best Rapunzel I've ever seen," he whispered in her ear. She was touched at his remembrance of her childhood story, the first that inspired her to be a performer.

Lucy had no words to express her gratitude, so she just wrapped her arms around his shoulders, pulling him to her. This was the first time she initiated this type of kiss. The type with heat and tongues and heavy breath. They stood in the spotlight, alone on the big stage, and their world was reduced to only the two of them and the circle of light at their feet.

And get this; according to this post by Richelle, The Fiery Heart  is going to be told from Sydney and Adrian's POV. As much as I'm in love with these two, I'll be honest that I'm not entirely sure about the alternate POV. But still, fingers crossed!

Finding a new home has never been so dangerous.

Andromeda has spent all seventeen years of her life aboard a deep space transport vessel destined for a paradise planet. Her safe cocoon is about to break open as Paradise 21 looms only one month away, and she must take the aptitude tests to determine her role on the new world and her computer assigned lifemate. As a great-granddaughter of the Commander of the ship, she wants to live up to her family name. But, her forbidden love for her childhood friend, Sirius, distracts her and she fails the tests. The results place her in a menial role in the new colony and pair her with Corvus, “the oaf”.

But when Andromeda steps foot on Paradise 21, her predestined future is the least of her worries. Alien ghosts from a failed colonization warn her of a deadly threat to her colony. And when Sirius's ship crashes on the far ridge in an attempt to investigate, she journeys to rescue him with Corvus.

Andromeda now must convince the authorities of the imminent danger to protect her new home. What she didn't expect was a battle of her own feelings for Sirius and Corvus.

Can she save the colony and discover her true love?

Thoughts: I fell in love with this book the moment I saw the cover. Isn't it just gorgeous? It looks so scifi-ish and I love how symbolic it is.

[Blog Tour] Book Review: Beg for Mercy

Beg for Mercy (Cambion #1)
by Shannon Dermott
Kindle Edition
Published August 7th 2011 by Wicked Truth Pubishing

Description:

Everyone dreams of that first kiss. Of that magic moment when your lips finally meet those of that special person you’ve waited your whole life for. A little awkward, a little scary, a little hot and every bit amazing. We speculate that the whole world will shake and time will just stop. No one, however, ever imagines that kiss to bring Death himself knocking.

Sixteen year old Mercy Moore's life just got more complicated. The kiss that originally could have meant she would finally have a boyfriend now was the kiss that could have very nearly ended his life. A small detail her mother conveniently never told her will take her life for an abrupt u-turn. Dating, no love, was now completely and utterly impossible. And the boy well, that boy would never be the same.

But life, however cruel, goes on. Far too soon for her taste, Mercy finds herself at a senior party with the elite students of her school and her best friend. And of all things, playing a stupid game that could very well mean the death of someone in that small room. If it were not for her best friend, the hottest guys in school, and a small need to fit in, she may have been able to escape the disaster that was to come. Her worst nightmare, her personal curse, her very life, only gets dangerously worse.

This is a young adult paranormal romance novel.

Review:

Mercy Moore is not your average sixteen year old highschool student. She is a part human, part succubus. A fact she accidentally discovered when she almost killed the first guy she ever kissed, Paul, who then later became her best friend. Due to this, Mercy has restricted herself from getting close to boys, much less having intimate relationship with them for fear that she might really kill one of them.

There were moments in the first dew chapters where we see Mercy getting really hung up over this; being envious of other girls who can freely kiss guys whenever they want especially when Paul, who she still had feelings with, was then going out with another girl. In other circumstance, I might have rolled my eyes on this, but it was quite difficult not to sympathize with her. I guess it became hard for her to resist the temptation because when a cute guy started paying attention to her, she couldn't help but succumb to it.

Though it wasn't hard to feel sympathy for Mercy over trivial things, I still had mixed feelings for her. On one hand, I think her usage of SAT words in each chapter was cute and hilarious. But on the other hand, given that she was incredibly smart, I disliked her tendency to be assuming and judgmental (especially toward Flynn) without good reason. Also, for not being curious enough when it was apparent that her friends were hiding something from her.

Another thing I had mixed feelings with was the romance. I like a good romance and no matter how many times I say that I hate love triangles, I wouldn't be able to help it if the romance is really well done. So, umm... "love hexagon"? I don't know how I feel about that ESPECIALLY when I'm on Team Flynn and the other guys are as irresistible. Luke, Flynn, Paul, Sebastian... These are the boys who play a vital role in Mercy's life. They are all really lovable with distinct characteristics so it's hard to compare them with one another.

Overall, Beg for Mercy is good start to a young adult paranormal series. It's new and exciting and will put you on the edge of your seat several times. And that ending? To die for! It was frustrating in the best way possible. Will definitely be reading the second book soon. :)

[Blog Tour] Book Review: Reaping Me Softly

Reaping Me Softly

Book Description:

Ever since a near-death-experience on the operating table, seventeen-year-old Arianne Wilson can see dead people. Just as she’s learned to accept her new-found talents, she discovers that the boy she’s had a crush on since freshman year, Niko Clark, is a Reaper.

At last they have something in common, but that doesn’t mean life is getting any easier. All while facing merciless bullying from the most powerful girl in school, Arianne’s world is turned upside down after Niko accidentally reaps the soul of someone she loves. This sends them both into a spiral that threatens to end Arianne’s life. But will Niko break his own Reaper’s code to save her? And what would the consequences be if he did?

Review:

Grim reapers, you say? I don’t think I’ve ever read a YA about grim reapers, so when the opportunity to read Reaping Me Softly came knocking at my door, I quickly welcomed it with both arms wide open. Plus, that cover! Who can resist a cover that gorgeous?

Ari is a sixteen year old highschool student who has the ability to see the dead. As much as this makes her feel different from other kids her age, she still thrives to live like a normal teenager and survive highschool while trying to avoid the school's queen bee, Darla, who makes her highschool life a living hell. One of the few things that encourages her to go to school is the fact that her longtime crush, Niko, goes to the same school and seeing him immediately lifts up her spirits.

Ari is that type of person who's not easily noticed by people. She's quiet and only opens up to her sister and bestfriend. She gushes alot about Niko to her sister Carrie, who's sick and is confined to the hospital. I love their relationship as siblings. Carrie is a fun character and I wished there was more of her in the book. Niko is the reaper who's in charge of the deaths in Georgia, who's also the guy Ari has been vying for. He disguises as a highschool student and was paired with Ari on a lab experiment. Ben is also a notable character that you'll have to meet. He is Ari's bestfriend and has a thing for Carrie.

I rarely read books with less than 300 pages because I couldn't finish/didn't end up liking majority of such that I've read in the past. Those types of books tend to have plots that are too rushed which make them seem unrealistic. However, in Reaping Me Softly's case, while there were certain aspects that felt too quick to develop, the events didn't seem forced but rather they flowed naturally and spontaneously that makes this for a fast and unique read.
